Students at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music

For more than sixty years, the Zimbabwe Academy of Music has been teaching students of all ages and backgrounds. Its campus is a hub of music making, culture, education and creativity in the heart of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city. ZAM’s doors have always remained open throughout periods of economic decline and political uncertainty. Its teachers have shared their skills to enable new generations of Zimbabweans to understand the joy and rewards that music can give. ZAM is an independent college and is completely reliant on its own income and donations.

FZAM – Friends of the Zimbabwe Academy of Music raises money to support the Academy in its work and help it reach out to the whole city. After a difficult period during the Covid pandemic, during which the Academy remained resolutely open, it now has ambitious plans for teaching, performance, and outreach programmes to bring music to children living in suburban areas. To do this we are making a new appeal for funds, not only for these activities but for overdue upgrades to the infrastructure of the Academy itself. You can read more about these plans on the Academy’s own website www.zimbabwemusicacademy.org. If you would like to make a donation to support these plans you can do so here:

FZAM is the new name for BZAM, The British Friends of the Zimbabwe Academy of Music, which was formed in 2011. One of BZAM’s first projects was The Bulawayo Schools Music Project which, with support from the British Council, worked with 500 young people across the city. It has also provided bursaries and support for festivals. We and the Academy gratefully acknowledge the support and donations over this period. The new name reflects the goodwill for the Academy across the world in addition to supporters in the United Kingdom.

If you would like to contribute to our work or know more, we would love to hear from you. You can write to the Trustees at contact@fzam.org.
